I left Hip Mama five years ago to care for my new baby and my mother. The radical and devoted mamas who took over did beautiful work with the zine, surviving and growing through an economy that meant the end of so many independent print publications and making Hip Mama probably the oldest continuously published feminist parenting magazine in the country. But that good run ended with issue #53 in October, 2012 when a health crisis tipped the balance in the collective.
One plan was for Hip Mama to go completely digital.
That got me thinking… DIGITAL ONLY? SERIOUSLY? NO WAY!
Print's not dead.
We don't need more screen time any more than we need more corporate takeovers and media conglomerates.
We need luscious, tactile recycled paper inspirations we can hold in our hands and take to the park.
We need media that's authentic and home made.
We need the kind of free press you can only have when you own it.
We've regrouped to establish a sustainable plan to move forward and to bloom. IN PRINT. Teen Mom NYC blogger Gloria Malone, political editor Victoria Law, and Rad Dad Tomas Moniz are just a few of the visionaries on board to relaunch Hip Mama.
